With WRTA facilitating over 2 million unlinked passenger trips annually, every zero-fare ride taken represents a collective step toward cleaner air, quieter streets, and reduced regional gridlock. Now, we are completely revolutionizing how those 2 million trips are powered.
The Shift to a Zero-Emission Fleet
The future of public transit is electric, and that future is arriving right now in the Mahoning Valley. We are aggressively transitioning our transit system away from traditional diesel-powered buses. In the coming year, WRTA is introducing its next generation of state-of-the-art, battery-electric transit vehicles.
By replacing our traditional fleet with zero-emission electric buses, we are drastically cutting down the localized emissions released into our atmosphere. These new buses will eliminate thousands of pounds of greenhouse gases annually, leading to cleaner air and healthier communities in our neighborhood centers, school zones, and commercial corridors. As an added benefit, electric engines run near-silently—making our city streets quieter and more peaceful for everyone.
Powered by the Sun: Our Independent Microgrid
What truly sets WRTA’s sustainability initiative apart is how these new electric buses will be fueled. We aren’t just plugging our new fleet into the standard local power grid and calling it a day. Instead, we are building a completely self-sustaining, clean-energy loop right here at our Mahoning Avenue campus.
Our newly expanded, state-of-the-art bus storage facility features cutting-edge, green infrastructure engineered to harness the power of renewable energy:
- Solar Canopy & Rooftop Arrays: We are installing massive solar panel arrays across both our facility rooftops and a brand-new, covered parking canopy. These panels will continuously capture sunlight throughout the day, generating massive amounts of clean, renewable electricity.
- Next-Generation Battery Storage: The solar energy captured during daylight hours won’t go to waste. It will be channeled directly into an advanced onsite battery storage bank, keeping the clean power secured and ready for use.
- Overnight Charging: When our fleet returns to the depot at the end of the service day, the buses will be plugged into our new heavy-duty charging stations. They will charge overnight using the exact electricity collected by our solar arrays during the day.
- Grid Independence: By relying on our own solar-powered microgrid, WRTA drastically reduces its demand on the local electrical infrastructure. This ensures we are not unintentionally charging our clean vehicles with electricity generated by traditional fossil fuels elsewhere.
